Cheboksary Polytechnic Institute was established on November 1, 1955, as a training and consulting center of the All-Union Correspondence Polytechnic Institute (VZPI). In 1994, a branch of the Moscow State Open University in Cheboksary was established on its base. In 2008, it was renamed the Cheboksary Polytechnic Institute (branch). In 2013, it was transformed into the Cheboksary Polytechnic Institute (branch) of the Moscow State Machine-Building University (MAMI), Cheboksary of the Chuvash Republic. In 2016, after the formation of the Moscow Polytechnic University by combining two major universities - the Moscow State Machine-Building University (MAMI) and the Moscow State University of Printing. Ivan Fedorov ", the institute was transformed into the Cheboksary Institute (branch) of the Moscow Polytechnic University.
