Northern State Medical University is a Russian higher educational institution. Founded in 1931 by a decree of the Council of People's Commissars on the establishment of the Arkhangelsk State Medical Institute as a base for training personnel for the health care of the European North of Russia. In 1935, the Department of Physical Culture and Medical Rehabilitation, headed by Professor G.I. Krasnoselsky. In 1994 AGMI was transformed into the Arkhangelsk State Medical Academy (AGMA); In 2000, the AGMA, in turn, becomes the Northern State Medical University (SSMU). From 1993 to 2012 (actually until 2009) the rector of the SSSU was a professor, academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Pavel Ivanovich Sidorov. In connection with the prosecution of Sidorov and subsequent recognition of his guilt in obtaining bribes through extortion on a large scale, on June 15, 2012 he finally left the post of rector of the SSMU.
